Initial response
My initial response was to think what Nottingham is lacking. A successful pavilion in my mind is a structure which enters a space; bringing with it something new. What does Nottingham need?
I thought about my impressions of Nottingham, what my response is to the city. My time here has brought much excitement and fear. University urges you to be a stronger character, to be out there and push the boundaries of your comfort zone. It is a fun and exciting city with a large proportion of the population being between the ages of 18 and 25 due to two large universities. A lot goes on to entertain this generation and keep the city lively. Through music, art and theatre Nottingham excels and is very well respected in these chosen industries.
However I feel that when you enter Nottingham there is no real impact of this underlying fun vibe. The city is very rigid and grey, with hardly any exciting buildings that really punch through the skyline or streets. The youthful, bold energy of many of the residents is not reflected in any of their surroundings. This is what I want to address.
I would like to create something that has a real impact, that is a beacon to passers by that nottingham is a vibrant city full of young innovative people. I propose a structure which enforces this energy and allows people to mutate and interact with it. Creating something that is both fun and beautiful. A landmark and talking point.

Project 1. Pavilion brief
Commencement Wednesday 02.10.2013
Interim Review Friday 25.10.2013
Final Review Friday 15.11.2013
With this project you can really let your imagination
fly. There are no cost constraints, no
client restraints; you can use any material in the world.
- To give people an unforgettable experience.
- To
create an experience which excites the
senses and sparks the imagination.
You are to consider a new lightweight
pavilion from the angle of the human encounter: how vision, touch, sound and memory
play a role in our perceptions of space, proportion, materials and light.
1. Firstly explore different environments - find an unloved enclosed
space in the centre of Nottingham (see Lecture One for examples). Develop your response to a site.
2. Explore different human encounters such as moods, senses
(sight, touch smell, hearing), climb, sit, talk, walk, contemplation. Develop a
specific direction, a distinctive approach to create as site specific
installation.
3. Investigate spaces, materials and light to create an
unforgettable pavilion.
This is a 6.5
week project, with an interim review in the 4th week, on Friday 25th
October.
Explore sites, select one
Investigate the unloved enclosed space
Explore different human senses
Develop your concept / idea that
lifts peoples spirit – how will the space/s, material and light make you feel?
Present your SCHEME….! of an unforgettable pavilion that excites the
senses and sparks the imagination
The brief is based on the Royal Academy, Sensing Spaces
exhibition that opens in late January.
